Model Le Coureur - French Lugger 1776 - wooden ship model kit

Mamoli - no. MV38 - scale 1:54

The lugger was a type of ship commonly used by French pirates during the Revolution and the Empire. It is undoubtedly of British origin. It is a type of ship equipped as a “bragozzo” on a larger scale, with 3 masts, a very long bowsprit, several booms, topsails, and some foretopsails. It was built by Denys de Dunkerque and launched in 1776. The ship's career was short, as it was captured by the English on June 17, 1778, during a battle, but it remained famous for the encounter between the frigate La Belle Poule and the frigate Arethusa. On June 17, La Belle Poule was sailing in the English Channel at the head of a division including the frigate La Licorne and the corvettes I'Hirondelle and Le Coureur, when after two hours of battle and a vain attempt to board, with 3 men dead and 7 mortally wounded. As for Le Coureur, the fate of the ship after it was captured by the English is very little known. Was it recaptured by the French in 1782, as some have claimed?

Most likely, this assumption was mistakenly suggested. Was it captured by the Americans at Terranova in 1780? This is what Laird Clowes claims in his book “The Royal Navy” and what some American research confirms, referring to a French lugger moored in Santo Domingo in 1782.
