Flying Cloud model - American clipper ship 1851 - wooden ship model kit
Mamoli - no. MV41 - scale 1:96
This type of clipper ship appeared in the USA around 1820. It is the last stage in the evolution of sailing ships and meets the needs of the American merchant class, who realized that the future of trade lies at sea. American builders created a completely new ship, without imitating the designs and models of the old continent, and immediately achieved results that would influence shipbuilding techniques around the world. The slim, hydrodynamic hull and wide sails made the clipper a very fast boat, which quickly led to challenges between ships.
The Flying Cloud, a masterpiece by builder Donald McKay, was built in East Boston in 1851. The ship gained a high reputation during the California Gold Rush, making the crossing from New York to San Francisco in a record time of 88 days, 22 and a half hours, faster than ever before.
