Built in 1796, the English brig “Portsmouth” was a typical example of a commercial vessel adapted for privateering. At that time, several nations recognized and supported privateering, legalizing it with so-called “letters of marque” or “letters of reprisal” granted to anyone who was able to privately arm a ship and recruit a crew.
