Model IL Leudo - Original Merchant Launch - wooden ship model kit
Mamoli - no. MV29 - scale 1:32
The origins of the Leudo are rather uncertain. It is believed that the Leudo originated from a type of medieval boat with two masts leaning towards the bow with delayed sails. Later, it lost its mast, which was replaced by a bowsprit with outriggers, which made maneuvering easier. The hull had a characteristic egg shape with an accentuated bend in the beams. Thanks to its characteristics, it could sail in very bad weather conditions, even unbearable for stronger hulls. Two wooden bulkheads divided the hold into three parts: the bow section, which was used to store sails and accommodate the crew, and the wider middle section, which contained the cargo. It was in fact a cargo boat with a displacement of 15 to 20 tons and was used for small-scale trade in the Mediterranean, such as equipment, agricultural tools, handmade goods, and clothing.
