In 1993, the US Army began fielding the M1070 truck tractor and the M1000 Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET) semi-trailer. The tractor is manufactured by Oshkosh Truck, while the trailer is produced by Systems & Electronics, Inc. in St. Louis. The HETS system transports loads of up to 70 tons—primarily Abrams tanks—but is also used for other large military equipment, such as forklifts and various tracked vehicles. It is capable of operating on highways (with permits) as well as other roads. This version of the HETS features numerous capabilities that significantly enhance the system's mobility and overall performance in a tactical environment. The M1070 tractor unit features front- and rear-axle steering, a central tire inflation system, and a six-person cab that accommodates two HETS operators and four tank crew members. The M1000 semi-trailer is equipped with automatically steered axles and a hydraulic load-leveling suspension. It can be air-transported by both C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
