Historical fact about the ship *Pola*
On March 28, 1941, during the Battle of Cape Matapan, the *Pola* and her two sister ships, the *Fiume* and *Zara*, were surprised in the dark by three British battleships. Leveraging their radar advantage, the British ships attacked the Italian cruisers at close range using both artillery and torpedoes[4]. Earlier in the battle, the *Pola* had been damaged by a torpedo dropped from a British aircraft and was left drifting. Her sister ships, the *Fiume* and *Zara*, arrived to assist but were illuminated by the searchlights of the battleships *Warspite* and *Valiant*, then shelled by 381 mm guns and sunk. The *Pola*, having been partially abandoned by her crew, was intercepted by British destroyers and scuttled with torpedoes on March 29, 1941. The sinking of the ship resulted in the loss of 328 lives.
