Model America - the yachting schooner - wooden ship model kit
Mamoli - no. MV26 - scale 1:66
The magnificent American schooner America.
The schooner America was designed by George Steers and built at William Brown's shipyard in 1851. Its name is still the most important and celebrated in the history of world sailing.
America, under the command of Dick Brown, a pilot from New York, set sail for England in June 1851 to take part in a regatta to be held on August 22 around the Isle of Wight, with no compensation for differences in tonnage or rigging. The prize was 100 guineas. America won an overwhelming victory over the English squadron. The words that the signalman conveyed to Queen Victoria, which have gone down in US history, are well known: ‘America first, Your Majesty. There is no second’.
America presented remarkable innovations in the form of the hull, especially in relation to the waterlines and the main section, the latter of which was significantly elongated.
