The Friesland was a second-rate ship of the line, equipped with 80 guns, built around 1663. It belonged to the great fleet of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, consisting of 1,700 ships. In 1672, together with 77 ships under the command of De Ruyter aboard the flagship De Zeven Provinciën, it took part in the Battle of Solebay against the combined English-French forces.
