A few facts:

The San Rafael was a typical two-masted “sprawling” caravel with rectangular sails and one lateen sail. It had a light hull with a shallow draft, which was conducive to sailing and provided excellent maneuverability in rough seas. Other sailing ships of that era were heavier and less resilient.
