A few facts:
The San Rafael was a typical two-masted “sprawling” caravel with rectangular sails and one lateen sail. It had a light hull with a shallow draft, which was conducive to sailing and provided excellent maneuverability in rough seas. Other sailing ships of that era were heavier and less resilient. The San Rafael took part in the Portuguese expedition of the Portuguese explorer Alfonso Goncalvez off the coast
