Santa Maria model - Flagship of Christopher Columbus - wooden ship model kit
Mamoli - no. MV42 - scale 1:50
What were the ships of the great discovery of the New World like? According to historical records, there were three caravels, fast ships with light hulls, several masts, and various sails. Scholars claim that Columbus' fleet actually consisted of two caravels, the Nina and the Pinta, and a “nao,” the Santa Maria, a ship with three masts, two square sails and a late sail, equipped with a bowsprit, which places it among the carrack class. However, do not be fooled by the small size of the Santa Maria. Its sturdy construction, the sailing knowledge of the time, and the vision of a great navigator made such a great undertaking possible. The year 1492 is a historic date known throughout the world.
