The flagship of the Yorktown class of specially designed US Navy aircraft carriers, three battle stars, lost in the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
YORKTOWN (CV-5) was laid down in 1934 and commissioned in 1937. After a trial run in 1938, YORKTOWN engaged in exercises simulating attacks on the east coast of the United States. Joining the Pacific Fleet in 1939, tactical exercises continued in 1940, focusing on the defense of the Hawaiian Islands in the North Pacific.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 YORKTOWN became the flagship of Task Force 17, which attacked Japanese naval garrisons in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands in February 1942 and began sailing the IJN in the Coral Sea in May 1942.
Returning to Pearl Harbor with serious damage that took three months to repair, YORKTOWN returned to sea.
