The privateer ship RATTLESNAKE was built in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1779 or 1780, allegedly based on a design by John Peck. It was owned by John Andrews and captained by Mark Clark. At various times, it carried between 1 and 20 guns and had a crew of 85 men. The ship was captured off the coast of America in 1781 by the British 44-gun ship ASSURANCE. The Rattlesnake was taken to England, where it was renamed CORMORANT and drawings were made. Its original lines have survived in the archives of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. With its low profile and very sharp bow, the RATTLESNAKE must have been very fast. In August 1783, it was renamed RATTLESNAKE again.
